PostSubject: MJ's magic blanket.   Mon Mar 30, 2015 4:29 pm

As those of you that I've managed to collar on Facebook know, I cannot stop thinking about MJ, and while I know many of us are too far away to practically help I wondered if people would like to help me make her a magic blanket.  Something she can wrap around herself and feel how much we love her and are willing her to get better. Sort of like a huge babs hug...

What do you think?

All you need to do is knit or crochet one or some 6" squares (that's 6"x6" rather than 6" diagonally) in whatever design you like, then send them to me BY THE END OF APRIL and I will crochet them all together.

I was thinking if we used an acrylic that was washable at 40 so something like stylecraft special dk or hayfield bonus dk or similar. Mainly in different shades of pink Smile but you can add other colours if you like.

Wool warehouse (other retailers are available Very Happy)  has a great range for example...
http://www.woolwarehouse.co.uk/yarn?blend_nav=5152&colour_name=2006&dir=asc&order=price&price=1%2C2.50&yarn_weight=2046

And I know you can still get free postage with the code: YARNDALE

There is a secret group on Facebook that hopefully you can request to join where you can post pictures and ask questions that will probably get a quicker response than on here but I really wanted everybody to know about this and have the chance to help, regardless of whether they use fb or not.

Thank you for reading xxx

Also, Sue Ryder charity shops sell new wool, if you just want to buy one ball rather than do a big order on-line.

The link that H posted let me order 1 ball. Normally postage of £2.95 would make that uneconomical but the YARNDALE code gave me free p and p.

I tried and totally failed at knitting and crocheting! But I think this is a wonderful idea. I only just put two and two together with all the squares that kept coming up on my newsfeed! I'd love to help in some way even though I can't knit at all! I believe I live the closest to MJ so if there's anything I can do in that regard then let me know. I know what you mean, I can't stop thinking about her too x

I haven't knitted since I was in the girl guides , but I will borrow needles from my Mum, and give it a go. I'll have to watch some youtube tutorials. What size needles? How many stitches to cast on for a 6 inch square?

I have made the centre and two out sides about three times now, first one dire, each other looked a bit better. Going to keep going on the one I have, I am using YouTube vid I linked above. If it's no good, I'll do another!

Jogger - I'm going to use DK wool with 4mm needles. The ball band will tell you roughly how many stitches you'll need. The yarn I'm knitting with at the moment suggests 36 stitches and 45 rows of stocking stitch (1 row knit, 1 row purl).

H - is it easier for you if the edges are stocking stitch or garter stitch? I can't start my squares until I get home but have a couple planned and can do the edges either way. Have never cracked crochet so have no idea what you will do with the squares but think stocking stitch might give you loops to poke your hook through. (technical terms there!)

Jogger I'm using DK wool, 5 mm needles and between 25-27 stitches gives me 6" width Smile

So do I need less stitches for 3.5mm needles? So confused, have now just undone attempt 2!

If you're using smaller needles you may need slightly more stitches but will depend upon your tension. I think if the square is slightly small H should be able to work a bit of a border to make it fit but if it's too big then it'll be hard to fit together.

Arghhhh I don't speak knit!
Loops are good, loopy edges are excellent.

Flo has offered to teach me to knit. I'm going to let her try. I'm so amazed by how well everyone is doing. I'm blown away by it all. So I'm going to face my fear and try to make a knitted square...

Poor Flo.

I totally don't/can't knit or crochet or own wool/needles/hooks. Is there some other way in which I can contribute? can I commission a square from someone more talented? or can I use another medium?

My Mum is bringing me needles today, I will buy wool on Wed when I'm near a wool shop, excited about this. Thanks for the tips.

Fickle you could donate some wool. I'm going to need wool to join the squares.

What other medium are you thinking of? Very Happy

I've taught myself to knit over the last few days. I can now cast on and off, knit, purl, rib, cable and change colours. I'm on to my 4th square now and I'm surprised how neat it's looking already!

Really frustrating that I can't start until Tuesday when wool should arrive. Am keeping my fingers nimble by knitting my own jumper!

H - judging by number of squares you know about, are you looking for quantity or variation in pattern?

We are aiming for 120 squares for the blanket.  Any number over this I'll make into a scarf for her.
Lots of squares in different patterns would be marvellous please Very Happy
